Any other popular ring-dyed fabrics besides denim?

Just dropped my crocheted afghan off at the Iowa County Fair! Looking good for a second Blue Ribbon as so far I'm the only crocheted afghan entered! I'm calling it 'Lakota Dreams.' The colors were inspired by a Native American blanket I saw in a magazine. This photo seems a little washed out; the colors are much more rich in Real Life. Anyhow, it's out of my hands, now. Entries will be accepted until 8pm tonight and judging is already tomorrow, about 10am. I am going to the fair on Monday (Labor Day) because that's when Mom wants to go, and I can also pick up my entry after 3:30pm as the fair winds down for the year. I saw the canned goods already entered - my Dilly Beans are MUCH prettier than those entered, so next year I may venture into, 'The Realm of Canned Vegetables' for even more giggles. ;)

I had never heard of that term, so I looked it up!

“Ring dyeing is a type of dyeing fault in which dyes are partially diffused to the interior of fibre. Most dyes are stained on to the fibre surface that form layer of dyes on to fibre surface. Thus around the fibre a ring-like appearance of the dye can be viewed cross-sectionally.”

I still don’t know what it means, LOL! :)

Personally am only familiar with the denim process. The white thread is dipped into dye one or more times.
This leaves the indigo dye on the outside.
As the fabric is worn and abraded, the underlying white thread shows through.

Got a book here from my days in a stonewash facility.
Will post some of their info if there is interest.

Beautiful afghan! Good luck :-)

We had a very stressful 2 weeks around here & that was exactly during the time I had to get my hairpin lace & crochet scarf finished for the county fair. I couldn’t make the deadline to submit, so it will have to be next year. My friend, who entered a few things in a mid-west fair (where she grew up) got several ribbons and a “Reserve” ribbon on a doily .... so close to ‘best in show’.

I’m knitting a lot now ... for whatever reason, I find it to be something that calms my nerves, more than crochet. I’m about 65% finished with the latest project.

Thoughts of Christmas are beginning to float across my radar occasionally ..... 🎅

Me, too! I want to do a Home Made Christmas this year, for the most part. Ours are usually very low key, so it's pretty easy.

I am almost finished with the afghan for Beau to take up to our cabin; it's in lovely 'manly' shades of blue that match his eyes. ;) I want to keep this current afghan, win or lose. I just LOVE the colors.

Yarn is on order for the next one I'll work on this Fall into Winter, inspired by this local color pallet:

Everybody has their thing. I took up weaving right about the time the first covid shutdowns started. I find it very meditative. I like crochet better than knitting, but weaving just really hits the spot for me. My Mom prefers knitting.

Pretty! Is that your farm, or just something nearby?

I wish! But, alas - just a pretty farm in Iowa County. I mean, ours has pretty scenery, terraced cropland like that, and our valley is much smaller but still misty most mornings, but the farm yard itself is MUCH more organized. :)

I’m actually kind of shocked that knitting has turned into a “thing”. One of the aspects I like is that I am still learning ‘new’ things, as opposed to crochet where I would likely be considered very advanced. With knitting, I’m looking up things on youtube, trying different techniques (like different cast on/off techniques).”Corrections” (like missed a yarn over two rows down - yikes!!), figuring out just how the yarn is configured for various stitches so you can un-knit & then re-knit, etc. have all been huge for my knitting.

Anyway, being in a learning stage & then the result of all the learning/work is so rewarding. I’ve always liked knitted items because they are not as “chunky” as crochet (which I still do love, BTW) and knitted lace is just gorgeous, IMO.

So those are some of the reasons I’m enjoying knitting so much & maybe because it takes a bit more of my attention because when you have 156 “live” stitches vs one in crochet to attend to, it takes your mind away from all the “stuff” going on that gets the BP up & the nerves jangled.

Just sitting here this morning with lots of thoughts running through my head .... Ida has cleared out along with HEAVY humidity & rain. It’s breezy, cool, low humidity ... sort of a pre-fall day. Fall is my favorite time of year. This afternoon, I’ll be mowing ... some of the grass stalks are knee high & that’s in the yard, not the fields so it’s a grassy mess.

So, what is running through my head that applies to the Fiber Arts thread? Our State Fair. I used to LOVE the fair; however, it has gradually changed (as does everything) to more of a ‘modern’ fair rather than one with a more old-fashioned, country flavor. There are still animals & I think my favorite part is watching the kids grooming & showing their sheep, cows, & pigs. I used to have horses & show them so I do enjoy some of the horse show classes as well.

The biggest disappointment is the crafts section .... it just has been getting skimpier & skimpier every year. They have now crammed it into a corner of a building where there are vendors selling sunglasses, cookware, hot tubs, windows, etc. Some of the items are still quality and “worthy” of a state level fair .... others are just ridiculous & poor quality, frankly. There are still some quilts and they do have a good way of displaying them, but the crochet/knitted items are not displayed well at all. My friend volunteers as a judge .... when we’ve visited the fair, she’s pointed out some of the reasons certain items have gotten ribbons; however, she has bemoaned the fact that the way the items are displayed, you cannot see those special stitches, techniques, etc. Sigh.

The BIG concern for me is that you could spend many, many hours on an item and they are not protected at all ... anyone could just stuff an item in a big bag (given out by those vendors, btw) & walk out with it. Like that baby blanket or shawl or doily? Walk out with it. I’ve talked to my friend about this & she agrees - has assured me that if she submits anything for me in the county fair, the items are displayed in a way that makes them harder to get to. At this point, I think some of my items would do well in the State Fair, but I would not enter anything due to the lack of protection/poor display.

So that’s what I’m thinking about ... trying to remember all the good times as a kid at the State Fair. I do not do the rides - have ear issues/vertigo & I’d be throwing up for a week if I got on any rides (merry-go-round & ‘bump’ cars are the only ones I did as a kid) so it’s all about the animals, crafts, & food items (GO for ribbons in canning!! :-) which are becoming an afterthought as our State Fair tuns “modern” in a citified environment.

To end on a happier note, the hummers have finally started coming to a new feeder I bought maybe 2 weeks ago. They love the 2 original feeders, so I ordered the same model to have a 3rd. When it came, the top is the same, but the perch/flowers are different. I guess they were so accustomed to the old ones that they hovered around the new one, would perch briefly, then take off & finally they quit coming. The perch works ... good distance so they can perch/feed. Two days ago, I noticed the nectar level looked a little lower & then I started seeing the hummers on the feeder again. I bought the 3rd feeder because I needed 2 at the hummer garden - it’s a very busy, ‘happening’ place. :-)

“The biggest disappointment is the crafts section...it just has been getting skimpier & skimpier every year.”

When I dropped of my afghan yesterday afternoon, about 5pm, there was one quilt, one sewn top and one quilted tote bag along with my afghan. People could drop off until 8pm. There were SIX canned goods there, total.

Granted this was the *SNIF* ‘Senior Division’ there were other entries in other parts of the Expo Hall.

Maybe our goal should be to contact some local craft guilds in our areas and find some ‘competitive ribbon winners?’ I mean, we CAN’T be the only two left, LOL!

Yarn shops? Fabric stores? Any other ideas for finding Fair entrants?

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I’ll have to think about that.

I will say that this is the reason my friend is after me (a LOT) to enter stuff in at least the county fair - trying to get “entries” up. Next year, I will definitely have some items .... can’t wait to enter the hairpin lace/crochet scarf ... I don’t think there will be anything like it :-) I don’t care about the ribbons ... perhaps someone will see the scarf & think “I want to do something like that”. Ribbons are a nice surprise ... icing on a cake. I used to feel the same way when I was showing horses ... the goal was to always “do better” than the class/show before and the ribbons were “extra” ... and funny how that works ... in the classes where I was most proud of my horse(s), we DID win ribbons! :-)
