South Carolina legal scion Alex Murdaugh orchestrated his own shooting in a botched assisted suicide scheme for his surviving son to collect a $10 million life insurance payment, investigators say, in the latest twist in the ongoing murder mystery surrounding the family.
Curtis Edward Smith, 61, was arrested on charges of assisted suicide, assault and battery, pointing and presenting a firearm, insurance fraud and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.
Smith, from Walterboro, South Carolina, is a former client of Murdaugh, 53, who represented him in minor traffic matters as well as a 2015 lawsuit that Smith filed against a forest management company.
According to police, Murdaugh paid him to shoot him in the head and make it look like a random, drive-by attach.

shocker - this is a surprise to absolutely nobody, or it shouldn’t have been if you have half a brain.
There are also mentioned in the article: a boy killed by blunt head trauma in 2015 that was one son’s friend; the housekeeper who fell down stairs and died for which the family paid out $500K wrongful death; the wife and son; and the old man died peacefully at home. Hmmm. Very bad people.
This is one messed up family. The story reads like a Netflix crime mini-series.
The partners at the firm have responsibility for any client funds he took. A bad year for them.
Sounds like the Murdaugh family were perfect Democrats.
10 million is a huge life insurance policy
Companies won’t usually write that except for a key man policy for a large business often privately held

Alex Murdaugh found his dead wife and son at night on his property surrounded by dense forest, swamp, out buildings and in the middle of nowhere. He was on the 911 call for eight minutes, walking around the property and at one point said,”I’m going to go back down” referring to the area where they were shot. Ending the call, he said I have to call others in my family. Not once did he say, I’m in fear for my own life, maybe the killer is still here, I am leaving until the police get here.
I’ve been following this and it’s headspinning. Southern Gothic at its best.
About the same time that attempted murder became ‘assisted suicide’ I think.
What kind of idiot has to hire a hitman to assist in a suicide to collect life insurance?

my guess is either a family member, or friend, of the young girl he killed in the drunk boating accident - wife/mother was probably collateral damage.
Did he also hire a hit man to kill his wife and other son?
