4 or 5 years after my first wife and I divorced, we were having lunch with one of our sons for his birthday. She dissed a few of my church friends for some of the things she thought they had behaved poorly. Then she moved on to folks I worked with.

Finally, I had a belly full of her garbage and said to her, “Ya know, if everybody I went to church with or worked with had to be perfect, I wouldn’t have anybody to work with or go to church with.” She looked at me with a puzzled look and promptly quit running her mouth.

Hard to see it at the time, and I know it runs counter to most Biblical teaching, but I actually think God blessed me with that divorce. Stayed single for 18.5 years before I married again.

Detraction. Gossiping is a form of detraction.

Truth is not a defense to a “charge” of drtraction because one detracts by telling the truth, but at an inappropriate time, or to people who do not need to know, or are better off not knowing.

Catholic moral theology still keeps track of this kind of stuff even if the common law only comprehends the slander and libel (falsehoods) of the ledger.
