PTSD is a tough road especially if the shooter never thinks such a situation would happen. Only patience and time will heal and talking it out with a certified therapist.

What if under hypnosis, it’s revealed he put the live round in the gun. Would that be considered doctor/patient confidentiality? Of course I don’t think hypnosis is allowed in court.

Yep. PTSD is real. So my only advice for Alec is to maybe buy a farm or a ranch. Get busy working the land. Work outside 16 hours a day. He'll never get over the shooting but with time, the pain will be a little bit less every day.
Assuming Alec is a human being with a conscience.

Damn tough road. Most people never even think about how it would affect them to kill someone. Unless you are a complete psychopath, it changes you. Permanently.
