Elk country? Bear country? The worst noise I ever heard in the woods was a bull elk beating the bejeezus out of a tree.
Could be, in fact most likely something explainable. It’s Oregon so of course we have elk and black bears mostly. I had a scary encounter with the latter and its cub once too.
