The term of art is "reasonable apprehension"/"reasonably apprehend". Fear is a loose synonym, but it is not necessary to be afraid. It is sufficient to believe that absent the defense someone might be harmed. Maybe it's just as well he didn't take the bar.
Chris tries to speak for all those mothers whose armed, wayward sons are on the streets holding up people, stores, businesses and the like. He’s trying to suggest that although they wave their guns around, we don’t have the right—lest we be raciss— or trigger-happy, or whatever other accusation they can think of, to use lethal force against Barak Obama’s imaginary young sons. You know, like Trayvon Martin, whom George Zimmerman justifiably killed.
The tens of thousands of victims actually killed in such confrontations were not available for comment.
