It seems people today do not understand that humor is a coping mechanism, it may be because we have it too good. People made fun of Hitler during WWII, Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War, Bin Laden after 9/11 etc. Even on Hogan’s Heroes a good portion of the cast was Jewish, John Banner lost the majority of his family in concentration camps.
Hollywood ran out Charlie Chaplin for him mocking Hitler, didn't want to offend the Germans so they wouldn't lose access to the lucrative German market.
And Robert Clary was an actual survivor of Buchenwald.

One of my dads friends was crew of B16 during WW2. Got shot down spent the remainder of war in a Stalag. Still had fragments of metal in his legs when he died at 76yo. One of his favorite shows was Hogans Heroes. To his dying day he was ticked off because certain cities were not bombed during the war.
