They sure were.

As a youngster, Glenn was a true prodigy with the guitar. Late in his life, as he was suffering from Alzheimer’s, he still never lost that genius ability with a guitar. Amazing. Plus he was a truly nice man.
A truly great talent taken from us by Alzheimers.
Well, Jerry Reed (in one of the videos) was no slouch either.
It has been said thar Prince was the bast Gitter player but I’m not so sure after watching Campbell.
I thought he was a lineman for the county…
Not to mention that Glen played guitar on just about every Rock ‘n Roll hit recorded in Los Angeles in the 1960s as part of the Wrecking Crew of studio musicians. You can hear his guitar licks on the Beach Boys “Help Me Rhonda.”
Glen was great, but Vince Gill was right there with him.
Always loved the proto-metal solo on “Just Dropped In.”
There were and are still a lot of good musicians out there that weren’t in the right place/right time like Dr. John sang about.
My ex-brother in law was a free finger guitar and banjo player that was contracted by a few companies like Gibson to travel and display their guitars. He was a two time world champion and he played a few types of music. But since this thread is about this, thought you picker people might like a change of style like this. His name is Stephen Michael King:

My new favorite is Konstantin Kovachev, the new lead guitarist with Russian rockers Leonid and Friends.
Their original lead, Sergey Kashirin was an absolute genius on guitar. He recently left the band to concentrate on movie score compositions and Konstantin took over.
He’s apparently considered one of the best ever Russian guitarists and was a long-time member of a very well-known Russian folk rock band.
There’s not much online presence as he joined L&F just before they started a US tour, but in concert this guy is incredible.
I really enjoyed Glen Campbell. Saw him only once at a Republican fund raiser. I got to meet him.
What a beginning in life he had in order to become the individual he was.
A member of the Wrecking Crew, he sang on hit recordings and no one even knew it was him….because the record companies didn’t want anyone to know.
Glen could “pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee anthill........”
Excellent guitarist; some of his songs are just too sad for me; I like Wichita Lineman.
