I also saw Eddie six times. He was spectacular.
That said, the 1986 DRL tour was better than the 1986 Van Hagar tour, without a doubt. There was so much firepower onstage with Dave and I never saw a tighter band - you could set your watch to Greg Bissonette.
Two great guitarists.
I just finished watching a documentary on Van Halen, not even an hour ago...
“I saw Vai with Zappa and with DLR in 1986,”
I saw that tour, too. 2 of the best rock guitarists ever.

As a guitarist myself, I’ve been coming through the late 70s and early 80s, Eddie Van Halen had a huge impact on me. And everyone else as well, that picked up a six string back in that day. For myself, I had to change the entire way I’d played the guitar.
Steve Vai paying some tribute is a beautiful thing; Vai is his OWN brand of monster shredder on the guitar…
We lost a guy that we shouldn’t lose - someone who brought joy and talent and inspiration to millions - while cretins like our current crop of politicians get to go on creating misery…
Never got to see Zappa but saw Vai with Whitesnake at the Irvine Amphitheater back in the day. Girl I went with knew him personally, seemed like a really cool guy.
Sounds like a worthy guitarist to carry on the EVH tradition. Similar to SRV playing Jimi Hendrix licks.
