I saw Vai with Zappa and with DLR in 1986, and several times solo. I met him, too. He's a very down-to-earth, very sincere, and not conceited guy. He also shreds.
I also saw Eddie six times. He was spectacular.
That said, the 1986 DRL tour was better than the 1986 Van Hagar tour, without a doubt. There was so much firepower onstage with Dave and I never saw a tighter band - you could set your watch to Greg Bissonette.
Two great guitarists.
