New technologies are kind of cool.

I have two credit cards now that are "tap to pay" and it works very well.

The new car I bought a few months ago has keyless entry and start. As long as I have the fob in my pocket I can walk up, put my hand on the door handle and it unlocks. Push a button on the dash and it starts.

I'm sure there are several cool things I could do with my phone that I'm not even aware of yet.

So yes, it would be kind of neat to do away with the key fob, having to pull out a card (from my RFID blocking wallet)... Just sync your accounts and vehicles with your embedded ID.

As neat as that would be, the potential for abuse and invasion of privacy is even greater. Sure, between Google, Amazon, and MasterCard someone would get a pretty complete picture of where I go and what I do. But if I ever want or need privacy, I can do that fairly easily. Walking around with your hand/forearm wrapped in aluminum foil doesn't sound like fun. Sounds more like leftovers.

Then again, we already have RF blocking bags for phones, RFID blocking wallets for credit cards, passports and such. Maybe there's a business opportunity coming for RFID blocking clothing. ;-)

Things like this follow a pattern:

1. First, it's an oddity. "You did WHAT?"

2. It becomes a fashion, an "in" thing. "Have you got your chip yet?"

3. It becomes widespread. "There's a problem with my chip; I might need a new one."

4. It becomes expected. "Can you believe Joe doesn't have his chip yet?"

5. It becomes mandatory. "Sorry, sir, we can't let you in; the reader says you don't have a chip."
