prevented her from getting hired at a local Harris Teeter location back in 2020.

The video, which is a screen-recording of the rejection voicemail she received from the hiring manager, was posted to TikTok last week by zenayajones8. So far, the post has amassed over 14 million views and thousands of comments from people who vented frustrations about constantly worrying about being "professional."

"Yes, Ms. Jones, I recommend if you apply for a job and you expect somebody to call you that you have a more appropriate, uh, response on your voicemail," the manager said in his message to Jones.

The only thing wrong with the story is that Harris Teeter should not have mentioned the voice mail message when they called her. They should have simply turned her down and left it at that.

Back in the early 90s I was looking for a better job and attended some courses. One piece of advice was to change your answering machine outgoing message to something professional. Still applies.

“Wassup, wassup, wassup,” she sang at the beginning of the message. “Wassup ya’ll it’s your girl Zanaya... I’m sorry I couldn’t answer the phone. Please leave your name, number, yeah you know all that.”

——————————

Really the only thing necessary upon reaching an outgoing message like this, is to hang up.

Yep. She’s not cussing, fussing or anything. She sounds happy.

Maybe “professional” means sounding miserable?

It may not be something I would ever have as a voice message to answer calls, but it still holds no indication as to the type of worker she might be. Harris Teeter may have missed out on someone that customers enjoy and appreciate, and have brought quality to their store. I remember leaving some funny messages as my answering message.

I always said technology was going to end up being the destruction of this nation. Appears I was correct with my assumption.

Due to no fault of my own, from my neurofibromatosis and cherubism I am missing most of my teeth and have a noted jaw deformity. As a result I am denied almost every job I apply for even though I meet the qualifications. Also I have seen well over one dozen dentists and oral surgeons and all agree there is no chance for any restorative work to be done. As a result I do not feel for any of these people who complain about not getting a job over something which they are in 100% control of.

You are correct. For Harris Teeter to have made an issue of this only serves to prove how racist they are for commenting on a black thing. As we are often told, it’s a black thing, we wouldn’t understand.

Thanks for the link... Newsweek has turned into a click-bait trap with dozens of links that take you to everything but what the headline is about.

I have my dog barking on our voice mail, but it is not as stupid as that girl's message. I probably wouldn't hire her either, but knowing that people get sued for everything these days, I certainty would not leave a comment on her voice mail telling her why.

I agree with you. The message was light, and good-humored. It would not be appropriate for an office, but it was just fine for a home. If a prospective employer doesn’t get that, that’s on him.

if she sounds like an imbecile- i’d question her judgement.
BUT Hiring manager coulda shoulda kept that to himself.

She was cheerful and upbeat. She was not cursing and while I had a problem with understanding her speech at the end I wasn’t put off. HT was calling to let her know she didn’t get the job. They made the decision before they picked up the phone to call her. They didn’t make the decision once they heard her message. It was nice of them to let her know her phone message was unprofessional but now she has “evidence” that they are racist even though they are not. And they will pay through the nose. They should never have said a thing.

You are very correct about technology. It seems this girls outgoing voice message, low tech as it might be, has affected her in a negative way.

But it’s not just messages on a machine. I’ve always told my kids to make sure their social media sites are not filled with trash that might negatively affect their future job choices. In fact, it’s better to have no social media presence or have a very vague and bland approach.

Smart employers will often do a social media search on a candidate before hiring them. I wonder what this girls TikTok, Facebook, etc. social media sites look like. Probably not something that would impress most hiring managers.
