There’s a charger that takes the wall socket ac and turns it into dc. It must do that with high efficiency while protecting the user from electric shock. I should know. I’ve testified about that in Federal Court during a patent litigation.
Once inside the phone, the dc input is used to charge the battery through a battery charger. Then there’s a complicated power architecture inside the phone with multiple dc-to-dc converters to provide different voltages to parts of the phone. I’ve also testified about that in front of the International Trade Commission. In the process, I’ve had an iPhone torn apart on the lab bench and made measurements.

Edison was a self aggrandizing jerk. His name is on a bunch of patents on which he did almost none of the work. His only real invention was the corporate research laboratory in which his minions did all the work and Edison took credit.
