Several Ukrainian government websites were offline Wednesday as a result of a mass distributed denial of service attack, Mykhailo Fedorov, head of Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation said in his Telegram channel.

The attack, which also impacted some banks, began around 4 p.m. local time, according to Fedorov. He didn’t say which banks were attacked or what the extent of the damage was.

Websites for the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cabinet of Ministers and Rada, the country’s parliament, were among those down as of Wednesday morning Eastern time. The government sites were offline as officials attempted to switch traffic elsewhere to minimize damage, he said.

At this point, how do we know we’re not the ones doing this to try to bring about the war?

So why not just cut off Russia's internet access ?

Oh yeah, if we do that all of those "essential" offshore specialists won't be able to replace Americans.

How can you possibly have any hostilities against a country which you are economically dependent on ?

Only a bunch of Leftist MBA types would get us into this mess.

There is little doubt that Russia continues to pressure Ukraine with cyberattacks and large amounts of troops on its borders. However the Russians have already achieved their territorial ambitions without firing a shot. Their “peacekeeper” troops seized the teritories and came across the borders unopposed. Now they are dug in and have been reinforced. It is highly doubtful that Ukraine will try to counterattack and face overwhelming combined Russian arms. The facts on the ground have been established. Russia will only unleash death and destruction on the rest of Ukraine only if Ukraine would foolishly try a counterattack in the seized territories. they will keep up the tension as a negotiating ploy to reduce sanctions and reach a settlement that prevents Ukraine from joining NATO. Doubt they will get a formal concession, despite the pressure, from Ukraine recognizing the Russian seizure of Crimea or these two provinces. In the absense of death and destruction, American markets are already recovering.

“At this point, how do we know we’re not the ones doing this to try to bring about the war”?

I believe that’s possible.

It’s also possible that someone, foreign or domestic, is going to take down our grid.

“So why not just cut off Russia’s internet access “?

Because Russia might retaliate and take down our electrical grid.

I think I know what you mean but am not sure.

We have 16 or so intelligence agencies with hundreds of thousands of people. I wonder what the hell they really do.

I’m old enough to remember that during the height of the Cold War it was reasonable to believe the western press and assume the soviet press was lying. Now at the very least it is necessary to assume both are lying.

> Because Russia might retaliate and take down our electrical grid.

Isn't that all the more reason to take down Russia's internet access ?

And why is the grid, or any other critical infrastructure on the internet instead of dedicated communication channels to begin with ?
