It is impossible to hijack the Monthly Fiber Arts Thread. Knitting, crochet, quilting, weaving, general crafting - there is no telling where it will go, and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our Fiber Arts Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a Month Ping List. We do post to the thread during the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Fiber Arts fans are welcomed any time!

Sewed a dress for my granddaughter last month. I like to use "scrap" pieces that many might throw out for these little dresses. This pattern (Simplicity 2377) lends itself to that.

I use my extra fabric for quilts, provided that it’s cottons. I learned the hard way not to include flannel. It just doesn’t last and the on quilt I made with it, all the flannel pieces ripped out and ruined the quilt.

There were far too many to replace, so I just ended up tossing it, much as I hated to do that.

Nice, that went together well. I used to make tshirt dresses for age 3 and under. Just buy a nice plain tshirt that goes with your remnant. Shorten the tshirt and use the remnant to make a gathered skirt. Great for the summer.

Good tip I will remember.

A friend likes to use a piece of flannel as her “stuffing “. I like thinner quilts so I kept that in mind.

I have one scrap bag with smaller pieces for quilts and one with larger pieces for dresses!

Put I am not a micro quilter. If you are piece of fabric less than say 5” x 5” you are going to the trash…

My latest is a stained glass window quilt. It uses quite a few pieces smaller than 5”.

I also did a broad arrow pattern in different shades of red, orange, yellow, green, and brown pieced out to look like maple leaves. I call it Falling Leaves quilt. It was challenging because you had to meticulously keep track of each pice so you knew what to match it to to give the maple leaf look.

OK So Friday is my LAST DAY of work after 15 years at current employer and 46 years in this “career”. Hopefully in a few weeks, I’ll actually be doing some Fiber Arts projects to share. I am pretty excited to have a blank canvas of time, coming soon!

When I got your ping I thought “wow - kind of late in the month” for a cute post/ping (folks generally don’t post real late to the current thread) .... it JUST dawned on me that it’s a new month, new thread! I am obviously waaaay behind mentally right now.

I wish I could knit and/or crochet a chicken tractor. I’m obsessed with chicken tractors ... looking at DIY plans, but getting bombarded with negativity (dad) so I’m bummed.

Still working on bobble sheep pillows so I’ll spare you - the bobbles have gotten tedious & I’m plodding along. The sheep heads (assuming the pattern is actually “ok”) should break the monotony. The real sheep are doing great - leading on halters now.

I never did post a pic of the faux fur hat in color ‘red panda’ so maybe I’ll do that. I looked up what red pandas look like - boy, are they cute!! I wish the color of my hat was that cute - it’s sort of a burgundy/brown color, depending on which way the light hits it.

That dress is SO cute! Love your creativity with using up scrap fabric; you have a good eye for color! :)

Got one of those in my life too. Sometimes the only way to deal with it is to ignore him and do the stuff anyway. And sometimes the only way is to hide my projects, because he'll either "help" or sabotage them, and quite frankly it's impossible to tell the difference.

Why your dad gotta be like that?

Why steal someone’s joy. It’s wrong.

I hope you persevere. Leave him out of it.

That’s so cute!! I gave up sewing clothes a couple decades ago.

Still quilting. This morning I bought a new Janome identical to the one my sis bought on Saturday. There’ll be many hours of use, but not for clothes.

The chicken tractor would have to be on HIS property (I live with/caretake my very elderly folks), so that’s the biggest issue. He didn’t want a coop/run that was ‘permanent’ so I figured a tractor would work great - could move it around, none of the ground would get torn up/go to dirt like a chicken run ... and predator-proofing a tractor looks fairly simple to me, based on designs I’ve seen. I do not want to be dependent on others for my egg supply.

I can be pretty bull-headed ... guess who I got that trait from? I might just do it anyway ... I think the only repercussions would be a bunch of “grousing” about it and I’d just have to deal with it.

On a happy note, I did receive my “Knit Stitch: 50 Knit & Purl Patterns” book by Kristen McDonnell, StudioKnit LLC

She has it broken down by how many pattern rows there are - 2 row repeats all the way up to 18-28 row repeats! Something else I really like is that she gives instructions for each pattern 2 ways: flat & in the round.

One skill I really do not have is ‘seaming’, either in crochet or knitting. It’s easier to “hide” things in crochet (joining, etc.) but not so much in knitting. The old “mattress stitch” ... one of these days I’ll figure out how to do it well. In the meanwhile, I avoid it whenever possible & knit in the round.

The pattern for the vintage Irish Moss Stitch (I love it & it’s a reversible pattern - good on both sides) came from Kristen so I figured I’d like her book, and I do - I see lots of stitch patterns I want to try.

Good times! :-)
