‘Our community is hurt’: Shepherdsville Police, citizens mourn K-9 Dash

SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Shepherdsville police and people of Shepherdsville mourned the loss of K-9, Dash, who was shot and killed while chasing a robbery suspect Wednesday night.

The Shepherdsville Police Department K-9 was received by a full police escort early Thursday morning as his body was brought to a Jefferson Animal Hospital in Louisville for a necropsy.

Shepherdsville PD Chief Rick McCubbin revealed more about the K-9, whose name is Dash, and the dog’s handler, Officer Jeff Schank. He said they responded to the robbery call at a Dollar General in Lebanon Junction when Dash was shot by the suspect, whose name has not been released. The dog died at the shooting scene; no officers were hurt.

McCubbin said Dash was not wearing protective gear due to the urgency of the situation but said it would not have made a difference because of where the dog was hit.

As tragic as the situation is, he said it could have been worse and that Dash died while doing his job and doing it successfully.

”One of the main things with a K-9 is to apprehend that suspect and protect their partner,” McCubbin said. “That’s exactly what happened, tragically.”

Retired firefighter Clinton Saul left flowers at a memorial, set up in front of the Shepherdsville Police Department for K-9 Dash.

Saul was born and raised in Shepherdsville and knew Dash. He said Dash was a hero.

“Our community is hurt,” Saul said. “I’ve not talked to one citizen that is not hurt over this.”

The loss of the Shepherdsville police K-9 was felt in Bullitt County and across Kentucky. Governor Andy Beshear addressed Dash’s death in a briefing on Thursday.

Jeez

In california people fill up walmart shopping carts and just walk out

Dollar General is a couple rungs down from walmart, nothing there needs to have police rushed responding to if they are just walking out of walmarts with full shopping carts unhindered

I mean save the police and police dogs, petty theft crap isnt worth them dying over

Just pass laws allowing retailers to protect their goods from obvious criminals stealing without fear of reprisal lawsuits. I suppose too many people from the wrong demographics will be dealt with properly then.

This was described as a robbery, not a theft.

I lot of what patrol dogs are for is to take the heat away form their handler.

That is what this one did.

I really do not think that most of the community knew or could care less.

I love domesticated cats and dogs and have owned several. But in the end they’re still animals. I’m not going to go into massive debt to treat them for illnesses…deal with them as if they’re human. I’ve never bought any of my pets - all strays I took in or that were abandoned when neighbors moved.

I can’t see myself giving an animal a funeral, I believe it’s ridiculous. But different strokes for different folks. When I lived in MA there was a huge animal cemetery that rivaled human cemeteries. I can’t understand how people could ever get so attached to an animal that they treated like a human. I love(d) my cats and dogs and I think they live a good life with my family and they’re taken to the vet for treatment when needed and put down when needed. They shouldn’t suffer, because they’re not human.

Also, if a vicious dog (anyone’s) attacks me or my family and I’m armed I’m going to kill it. So would any cop.

These stores refuse to spend money on armed security officers. Like Coach, thousands of dollars for purses and yet they don’t pay for top notch security. Insurance companies should require armed security. I mean, if you have a specific dog in your home, insurance companies require you to have additional insurance on home policy or even, some insurance companies won’t cover dangerous dogs on the list.

It’s OK when cops shoot dogs, but heaven forbid...

No it’s a police dog and shooting at it is the same as shooting a police office. Police dogs have a badge too, they just don’t carry a gun, they have teeth. So this thug will be tried for shooting an officer.

“shooting at it is the same as shooting a police office...”
No... please repeat... it’s only a dog... it’s only a dog.

Ok, that is different. Either way my solution would handle either case.
