LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signaled Friday she will veto Republican-sponsored legislation that would freeze Michigan's 27-cents-per-gallon gasoline and diesel taxes for six months amid high prices at the pump.

When Michigan politicians rail against the oil companies and warn them to not engage in ‘profiteering’ during times of high gasoline prices, they don’t seem to mind that the state will be reaping a windfall.
Howzat? Michigan has both a per-gallon tax and a SALES tax on gas. When the cost skyrockets, the same number of gallons sold produces more sales tax due to the higher dollar amount spent per transaction. There ought to be a cap or reduction in the 6% sale tax rate (on gas) to cut us some slack.
