Countdown to Pi Day!
piday ^

Posted on 03/14/2022 9:10:44 AM PDT by mylife

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. Pi Day is an annual opportunity for math enthusiasts to recite the infinite digits of Pi, talk to their friends about math, and eat pie.

Pi has been calculated to over 50 trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

“Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world.”

I read some places in the world celebrated Pi Day on 31 April...31/4.

pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize

I'm a math guy, and I never thought that this sounded like "fun."

Do love me some pi though.

Maybe I’m missing something, but that sounds like nonsense to me.

Pi is of course based on two measurements, a circle’s C and D. Now, a calculated value can only be us “good” as the relevant measurements are. So if a circle’s C and D are known to, say, eight digits each, pi can only be known to eight digits.

50 trillion digits? Nope, not buying it. But maybe I’m missing something here.

Rensnalear Polytechnic Institute hockey cheer from the 1930’s (as told to me by an ancient graduate in the 1980’s):

“E to the x, dx, dx
E to the y, dy
Tangent, secant, cosign, sign
3.14159
Disintegrate them RPI!”

I’m sure that Prime Mistake True-dolt would be happy to make the 31st of April (31/4) a stat holiday. I think it would be appropriate for him to announce it on the 1st of April.
