Gutfield never served in the military and never was a war correspondent, so what exactly did he “go through” during the Iraq war? One assumes he is talking rhetorically, but it isn’t possible for me to trust ANY media figure these days. So, because he’s talking first person about something he “went through,” I don’t know his meaning.

I think that it's obvious he means that, in previous conflicts, he may have (directly or indirectly) encouraged patriots (for the cause of freedom) to go and fight, and that he now regrets having done that.

He probably went through what I did - friends yelling at me over Bush and Iraq, I even had a threat or two, general unpleasantness with leftist maniacs etc.
