There are ver few places in VT where you aren’t 3 miles from a road.

Go down hill. You will find one.

On the micro level they are brilliant but on the macro/ political not so much. But then what can you say about a country that (alledgedly) elected Biden?

I do not get how people just take off on “hikes” with a phone not fully charged and nary a map of some kind.

Kudos to the cops etc but thousands spent to rescue the clueless from themselves.

I did the downhill thing trying to make a bushwack shortcut in the mountains once and almost skidded off the side of a granite dome.

The K9 was named Lakota

I am pretty sure everyone should be outraged by this.

They'll Sioux.

She couldn’t have been that lost. She had cell phone service.

You can always tell you are on a scenic route in VT. The road is windy, hilly, technically one lane in each direction, a stream running along side the road, and no cell phone service.

And that describes 90% of the state roads in VT.

We count on no cell service when we drive through the state. Course, NH is not much better.

A culturally-appropriatng dog! Horrors.

At least they could have named the dog “Abenaki.”

That’s a truism everywhere. Before you set out, get your bearings and know what you are surrounded by — roads, lakes, ocean, bays, highways, ridges, valleys, etc. That way you can pretty much know where you are located and how to get to a safe place. I’ve used dead-reckoning like this many times and never gotten lost. Of course, I rarely head off cross-country.

If the trail(s?) in question are poorly or confusingly marked and “go all over the place” with many changes in direction, etc., like some of the trails in the National Forest / “wilderness areas” near my place, seemingly correctly picking a direction to walk out can lead to even more trouble. Granted this involves some quite impassable areas, small gorges, and such, that are difficult to pick out in a satellite view. And in many of the areas near here, there is no cell signal anyway. I’m seriously thinking about getting a stand alone GPS device. (My wife, daughter and I have never been seriously lost, but, we have had a couple instances of trails becoming so confusing or impassable that we had to “go back the way we came” and got back to camp a couple hours later than planned.)

It is always a good idea to let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back.

Many places there is no cell service and too often the maps are outdated, showing trails that turn out to “trail” off into nothing, not showing new trails people have made (can be quite confusing), crude signs don’t match info. on the map, etc. As I mentioned above, a stand alone GPS can be helpful, but one can still run into impassable washouts / slides, etc.

Even in areas with cell service, if one is taking lots of pics and such, the phone can run down unexpectedly soon. A modest battery bank is a good idea...

Interesting tip I’ve read - leave a dirty sock in your car with a map of your route. It will help the dogs find you!

How cute! Most police departments buy partially trained dogs (very pricey!) which has it's advantages. The young man must be a competent dog trainer.

Well, I have my doubts: she loves Germany as Mrs. Obama loves America. Sad but true.
