He didn’t fit James West then and the soundtrack was bad. The gadgets were good however. I suspect the movie would have done much better with a white lead. Maybe there would have been a sequel. Steam punk is always popular.
It was an early movie where they replace a white male lead with a minority or woman and flops like Terminator, etc.
Imagine the howls if the Shaft remake woulda had somebody like Keanu Reeves or Bradley Cooper in the lead role.

He apparently was supposed to play Neo in the Matrix but was tied up with Wild Wild West, couldn't get out of the contract so the part when to Keanu Reeves.
Too bad. He would have been better in the Matrix.
