AB was really a microcosm of the US, especially on the dance contests. Kids from all over would compete on their local station contests and the winners would be sent. A subsequent contest featured an Hispanic couple from El Paso, a couple from Oklahoma, and a couple from Ohio, as examples. A few of the regulars looked Asian and there were several regulars who were black. The awards were given on the basis of talent, as chosen by the viewers. I truly thought when I graduated from high school in 1970, that all vestiges of racism would be completely gone within the next few years. That was the way things were going at that time.
