Indonesia's Anak Krakatoa volcano erupts, spews huge ash tower

The offspring of Indonesia's infamous Krakatoa volcano erupted on Sunday, spewing a towering volcanic ash cloud some 3,000 metres (9,800 feet) into the sky.

Mount Anak Krakatoa, which means Child of Krakatoa, belched thick ash over the strait that separates the islands of Java and Sumatra forcing authorities to warn nearby residents to wear masks outside.

When the Krakatoa volcano erupted in 1883 it spewed smoke and ash that was not unusual. The next evening in exploded with such force that 3/4'ths of the island was vaporized. The tsunamis and pyroclastic flows killed over 36,000 and was felt in New York. It has been said it was the loudest sound ever on earth.

Can’t help but wonder how solar panels will do with the atmosphere partially blotted out and ash falling continuously on the panels. For that matter, wind won’t be much either, as wind is created by unequal heating of the earth’s surface...less sunlight, less wind.
