Ukrainian Troops Appear To Have Fought All The Way To The Russian Border

Ukrainian forces around Kharkiv, in northeastern Ukraine, appear to have pushed Russian troops east past Ternova, a settlement on the Russian border.

If confirmed, the Ukrainians’ liberation of Ternova could mark an inflection point in Russia’s 10-week-old wider war in Ukraine. In late March, Ukrainian forces drove Russian invaders from northern Ukraine. Now it appears they’re driving the invaders from northeastern Ukraine, too.

Heavy fighting continues around Izium, south of Kharkiv—and also around Kherson on Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. The Russians late last month briefly advanced around Kherson before stalling out. And Russian battalions more recently have captured a few settlements around Izium.

But those Russian gains are in jeopardy owing to Ukrainian gains around Kharkiv, a city of 1.4 million just 25 miles from Russia. As the Russian front collapses around Kharkiv, it could free up powerful Ukrainian brigades to push south, toward Izium, potentially tipping the fighting there in Kyiv’s favor.

The general staff of the Ukrainian armed forces was the first to hint at the Russian retreat across the border near Kharkiv. Battalions from the 138th Separate Mechanized Brigade, part of the Russian 6th Combined Arms Army, fled across the border to the Belgorod region of Russia “due to significant losses,” the general staff stated on Tuesday.

The U.S. Defense Department’s daily Ukraine briefing didn’t mention the purported Russian retreat. But heat-detecting satellites operated by NASA did register significant fires around Ternova starting around Friday—fires that could signify intensive fighting. The fires seem to have faded by Monday….

You can thank the general staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces for this “in-depth assessment” of the war, written by David Axe, a journalist, author and filmmaker based in Columbia, South Carolina. Even though the Pentagon failed to mention this supposedly important development, the Ukraine govt. was good enough to break it down for the readers. 🤣

It’s been about 3 months and the Russians are about in the same place they started.

Great plan.

The truth of the matter is that the best Orc troops that were facing the UA in the Kharkov region were pulled to the Izyim Bridgehead - the focus of Orc efforts to drive a pincer south, cutting off and surrounding a large part of the UA Army.

Now facing the UA are forced Ukraine conscripts and Ukraine volunteers. Third rate troops.

Should the UA try to go further than the border, there are a host of Orc troops in bivouack on the other side.

I would imagine that, at some point, the Orcs will bring up more artillery and shell the UA back some kilometers, even if they do not have troops to hold the Ukraine ground.

Not really a victory, but a taking advantage of Orc lack of troops.

Video on current state of the military developments....covers the Ukrainian counter offensive near the end of the video.

Ukraine - Military Developments. US intel, Snake Island, Popasnaya, by Jacob Dreizin

What’s going on in Kharikov everyone was stressing out there was some kind of Ukrainian counter offensive. You’re talking about maybe 500 Ukrainians that are advancing on a few villages near the Russian border. The Russians simply didn’t have the forces there to defend those villages so they pulled back.

The significance of that counter offensive is not in taking a few villages. The significance likely was to bring Russian re-enforcements away from the Izyim sector and Eastern Kharikov in order to relieve pressure near the Russian border. That didn’t happen so essentially it was a tactical win, it had no strategic significance at all. So, you are probably going to hear a lot about this massively exaggerated Ukrainian offensive between Kharikov city and the Russian border, but really it had no strategic significance at all.

You misunderstand the Orc move.

They had the forces there, but pulled them to their main active focus at the Izyum bridgehead.

It was not a question of having some number of troops, but a question of where those troops are put to a better use. Moreover, there is a host of Orc troops across the border, including 16 Mechanized Brigades that have never been committed.

The Irish-Finnish volunteers may number 500, but there are many more as the UA 92nd and 10th Brigades are there.

You misread my post. I didn’t write the words. It was a transcript of the analyst’s video on the subject which I listed the link to and transcribed the part concerning Kharikov.

Yes as you say, “They had the forces there, but pulled them to their main active focus at the Izyum bridgehead.’

His point in mentioning the small number of troops the Ukranians had there was that this was no big deal and it was being blown out of proportion by the Ukranians as a successful counter offensive which is exactly what the media has been portraying it as...another Snake Island victory story. Russia didn’t lose the battle, they chose not to engage there at this time when their focus is on the Izyim bridgehead.
