The video has a link to a story on Mashed. Here’s the list so you don’t have to do the same thing I did.
1. Cheese Fondue
2. Casseroles
3. Microwave food (?)
4. Boxed cake mix (Never went away)
5. Poke cake (cake with grooved poked down into it filled with something)
6. Pop rocks
7. Pudding
8. Sloppy Joes
9. Peanut Butter
10. Condensed soup
11. Oatmeal
12. Boxed mac and cheese
Pop rocks were fun. My girlfriend in high school liked to load a bunch of them in her mouth then kiss me.
Interesting experience.
When did casseroles, Sloppy Joes, Peanut Butter (particularly peanut butter!), oatmeal and Boxed mac and cheese (I don’t like it!) become unpopular or drop out of sight?
The only ones I no longer routinely see are pop rocks (not sure what that is!) & Poke cake (again not sure what that is!).
In the 70s-before everyone got a microwave-we had “boil-in-bag” frozen meals. Now they are called “sous vide”.
Those foods are all the cheap, ‘poor people foods’ we ALL had to eat in the 70’s when Carter was starving us out!
Brandon is doubling down, AND is on steroids these days!
9. Peanut Butter
10. Condensed soup
12. Boxed mac and cheese
I have never stopped buying these three.
I had JIF(choosey mothers choose Jif) Peanut butter for breakfast on a bagel and dinner on a crackers with extra sharp cheese just a couple days ago.
I had Campbell’s vegetable soup last weekend with lunch.
We still buy Mac and Cheese. We now buy Annies not Kraft dinner.
In college(1981-85) we bought generic Mac & Cheese 5 boxes for $1, limit 10 boxes and lived on those.
Many of these anteadate the 1970s (2,4,9,10,11 are some I’m sure about)
The first wave of natural and organic did come in the 1970s
Yeah, I’ve missed peanut butter ever since the peanut allergy pandemic killed off half the world and peanuts were made illegal. This here soy butter just ain’t cutting it.
Thank you.
Boxed man and cheese never went away. Nor did anything else on the list for that matter.
