Goodbye NYC; Estimates show big city losses, Sunbelt gains
Associated Press ^ | May 26, 2022 | Mike Schneider

Ko Im always thought she would live in New York forever. She knew every corner of Manhattan and had worked hard to build a community of friends. Living in a small apartment, she found her attitude shifting early in the pandemic. After her brother accepted a job in Seattle in the summer of 2020, she decided to move there too.

“It was fine until it wasn’t,” said Im, 36. “The pandemic really changed my mindset about how I wanted to live or how I needed to live.”

Eight of the 10 largest cities in the U.S. lost population during the first year of the pandemic, with New York, Los Angeles and Chicago leading the way. Between July 2020 and July 2021, New York lost more than 305,000 people, while Chicago and Los Angeles contracted by 45,000 residents and 40,000 people, respectively. […]

Brooking Institution demographer William Frey said he believes the population declines in most of the largest U.S. cities from 2020 to 2021 are “short-lived and pandemic-related.”

When it came to growth rates, as opposed to raw numbers, the fastest-growing cities with populations of at least 50,000 residents were in the suburbs of booming Sunbelt metro areas. They included Georgetown and Leander outside Austin; the town of Queen Creek and the cities of Buckeye, Casa Grande and Maricopa, outside Phoenix; the city of New Braunfels, outside San Antonio; and Fort Myers, Florida. They had growth rates of between 6.1% and 10.5%. …

What does she have against tyrannical lockdowns, tyrannical gun laws, confiscatory taxation, homelessness, crime and BLM riots? Racist!

Well, NYC inhabitants may be moving to the Sunbelt but New York City's loss is also a Sunbelt loss. They should move to California or New Mexico.

Big LIE. If population is declining why do they keep having to widen streets and sidewalks to deal with the increase in people? Media always spreads this population hysteria type story to make people think we need yet more swarms of immigrants to save us. Any statistics claiming population is decreasing are patently fake. Some Americans are moving out. I am one who did. But this thing is exaggerated greatly, while the flow of illegals is intentionally under reported.

people, and i use that term loosely, moving from new york mainly , have driven the cost of homes and rents up by 50 to 100 percent on the gulf coast from st pete to fort myers. working people and people on fixed incomes are being forced to move out of the area. restaurants are closing because of lack of workers. health care is losing people who suddenly can’t afford to live there. Doctors aren’t taking new patients, and are leaving rather than deal with the obnoxious twits who are moving into the area. If you like NY, you’ll love Sarasota county. We had a nice area with reasonable costs and a safe community. no more.

LOLARMAOOTF! Short-lived, who is he kidding? Once they get used to low taxes, low crime rate, better schools - not many will go back.

You couldn't get me to move there. Lockdown cities with the craziest politicians (think A.O.C. level). Criminals rule there.

I have to say that these loses are generally still small given the size of these cities.

When you say people are “being forced” to move out of the area, how would you describe the force? Are armed government troops herding them en masse to new locations? Sounds scary!

Why would the woman cited In the first paragraph in this article want to move from New York to Seattle, other than wanting to be near family? Seattle is so left wing, it makes New York seem moderate.

Years ago our Democrat governor Corzine in NJ admitted that we had lost population if we didn’t count ILLEGAL immigrants; NY and NJ are “sanctuary states” for just that reason. To protect the livelihoods of the gubmint employee caste, they open the floodgates/stop enforcing immigration laws - and expect the rest of the country to subsidize it by allowing their residents to deduct the resulting high property taxes from their taxable federal income.

The problem with these ageing cities is there is a ton of deferred maintenance that needs to be done on the crumbling infrastructure but nobody to pay for it; the taxpayers (individuals and companies) are fleeing, and are replaced with people who contribute little or nothing but have huge costs associated with them (providing EVERYTHING for them).

Ah, but you forget one thing. They do contribute something: their vote.

I recall that before COVID, there were a number of articles praising the energy efficiency of dense urbans areas. They touted mass transit over the car. They touted the efficiency big schools over little schools. They touted big city culture, polyglot ethnic mixes and big city progressive values. They looked down their noses at low density red areas. Now we know big city density is an inescapable death trap ruled by fools.

Not here; they are illegal aliens - so we lose House seats as well (both in NJ and NY).

The odd thing about the Buffalo shooter’s targeting of blacks was that they really don’t play a role in the replacement model; if anything, they themselves are also being replaced by imported populations (and this has led to some of the tensions with Asians in NYC). Many blacks’ families have been here for centuries; they are just other Americans being replaced by imported foreigners.

Any town where NYers go loses as well. Because...NYers.

Because she’s stupid. She thinks the problem is something other than liberal polices. What, I have no idea. But applying logic to NYers is wasted time.

“...the suburbs of booming Sunbelt metro areas...”

This is where Biden is shipping all the illegals to. They already ruined the cities, now they want to ruin the suburbs.

From the article: Eight of the 10 largest cities in the U.S. lost population during the first year of the pandemic Scamdemic and after the riots by Democrats and Communist organizations such as Black Lives Matter TM and Antifa.

Once the mayor paints the Communist organization slogan "Black Lives Matter" on a city street, they're pretty much announcing to the world that law and public safety don't matter and that productive people should move away and stay away.

A city dies for many reasons but the announcement, outside of war, is always made between the lines.
