Constitutionally, intellectual property is supposed to be “to promote the progress of science and useful arts” and only be “for limited times.” (See Article I, Section 8, Clause 8.)
Some technologies are existential threats to humanity and should have NO protection as intellectual property.
Genetic manipulation is one of those things I wish had it’s profit center removed. It may serve a purpose in limited cases, but its advancement does not need to be artificially accelerated by granting patents to DNA sequences.
I feel similarly about artificial intelligence. Intellectual property encourages reinvesting profits in the underlying product which accelerates the progress of research and development, etc. This process results in the improvement in quality of life for everyone (generally speaking). But some technologies need to have their growth slowed rather than accelerated so we, as a civilization, can evaluate their impact.
Genetic manipulation and artificial intelligence are bigger threats to humanity than even nuclear weapon proliferation, in my opinion.
I will believe it when I see it. The mention of Pfizer and Moderna right now give me pause because Moderna is known for nothing but the covid shot.
This information could be way premature and merely be a way of rehabilitating the image of these companies after the total fail of covid shots.
I want a cure for all cancer but I am not willing to take the idea of mRNA as a cure all because it certainly failed with covid. This article is out of Yahoo. I’ll wait.
