Its weird how a movie that made 50 million domestically in an opening weekend and is number 2 in box office just a little behind the number 1 movie is said to have “fizzled” just because the people that estimate how well it would do had guesstimate it wouod do even netter.
When all is said and done, I expect it will show a tidy profit. The article mentioned the Jurassic World opening. That movie is being advertised on pretty much every commercial on TV right now for products ranging from Progressive Insurance to fast food. No suprise that it dominated the box office.
Well, you’re right, $50 million is still a lot of money. It’ll be interesting to see what it does next weekend. My guess is that ticket sales will fall off a cliff.
If you invest $300 million and make back $50 million, that’s fizzling. If you invest $2 million and make back $40 million, that’s a hit.
The movie didn't just “fizzle”. It bombed big time.
Just compare it to “Top Gun Maverick”.
It's not even on the same planet. Don't go woke and don't pick fights with DeSantis, Disney.
Guessing how much a movie will gross in its first weekend is a training ground for becoming an economist for the New York Times or the Washington Post. The only thing missing from these reports about actuals is the word “unexpected”.
The number one movie is in it's second week (so not it's highest) and it also came in below expectations in its first week. And this is a "Toy Story" tied movie, always box office guaranteed gold. Say what you will about Hollywood but the accountants know what the patterns of a money maker of a movie and if expectations for a summer blockbuster release are missed by a big margin on week one then they start sweating ... a lot.
You can bet that Disney CEO Chapek is sweating hard right now. He took over after prior guy installed a super-woke culture and those woke NPCs don't care about making money, they care about making gay propaganda, especially for kids. And it's catching up with them at the box office and crucially in statehouses, especially Florida which just struck down their special legal protections in response to woke lobbying about grooming kids. Consequently the stock has tanked. A couple of high profile flops and he won't be CEO much longer.
1. The last Toy Story film made $120 in its first weekend. This made $51m
2. There were NO other childrens' films on the market, yet it still performed poorly. 3. "Lightyear" cost over $200m to make and they spent $100 million to market it.
4. It's been banned in 14 countries, including Egypt, Malaysia and Indonesia, with a combined pop of over 500 million.
5. Minions: Rise of Gru is coming in a week and will cause its revenues to collapse completely
More like they estimated how well it would NEED to do in order to pay for production costs.
Also, the weekend grosses are in a bad pattern

Friday $20.7m
Sat. $16.3m
Sun. $14m
For a KIDS movie, you would expect the Saturday numbers to be higher than Friday.
Parents aren’t taking their kids to see it.
