With a rueful smile and a fond wave Serena Williams left the Centre Court on Tuesday night, possibly for the last time.
If this was the last occasion we saw her at Wimbledon then at least she left with the indelible print of a superb contest against a poised and youthful opponent.
Harmony Tan, the world No 113 from Paris, said she was scared when she saw her first round draw, but she showed remarkable composure in pulling off a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 victory that may go down as Williams's final defeat at SW19.
Going into a new deciding super tie-break, she fell 0-4 behind but recovered to claim it 10-7. The American, now in her fifth decade, could not haul her ageing frame over the line with more than three hours on the clock.
The fire still burns within - everyone saw that - but even she could not make up the deficit of not having played for a year coming into this.
Yet Williams still achieved her aim in a sense. She wanted to erase the memory of limping out of here in 2021 after six games of her opening match, and she certainly did that.

Serena didn't have a temper tantrum and have a meltdown all over the court.
I was also surprised. Maybe she was just too darn tuckered out to kick up any dust upon her exit.
Or, maybe Serena knew her daughter was sitting somewhere watching her Mom on TV. The little girl is 4 y/o now. Old enough to know what’s generally acceptable behavior during a tournament.
If this is truly her swan song, kudos to her for going out with dignity.
There is no question, she’s had a great run. Her records speaks for itself.
But it is now time to pass the torch. It happens to us all.
Unlike the pouting drama queen Naomi Osaka, Serena has ALWAYS sat for press interviews, even after her most brutal losses. Osaka refuses to talk to the press after losses, citing “mental distress” and even “PTSD”.
Harmony Tan, age 24, Serena Williams, age 41. It’s hard to beat the ravages of Father Time. đź•‘ ⏳
Serena is a has-been.
She’s aged out. The younger ones are hungry and better athletes. Happens to us all.
Naomi Osaka shouldn’t be playing sports if she cannot handle intense scrunity. Isn’t she half Japanese anyway? Odd.
What’s “SW 19”?
SW 19 simply refers to the postcode of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC). Therefore, the post of Wimbledon is 19 as it comes under the Battersea district and so it is called SW19.
“If this is truly her swan song, kudos to her for going out with dignity.”

I agree.
Thank you
Eventually the steroids won’t work anymore.....
I’m thinking age plus being a mom changed her attitude somewhat.
It’s the woke black half that’s the problem.
never liked her or her sister. And besides trans men will be taking over this sport pretty soon
I watched a good bit of it because it looked like Serena was in trouble from the beginning.
That Canadian girl, Harmony Tan, was literally half the size and weight of Williams.
I cheered when Tan won.
Serena Williams is done. Long past her retirement age. Tennis is not golf.
Congratulations to Harmony.
