President Biden awarded the Medal of honor to four U.S. soldiers today.
Advertisement One of the men, Major John J. Duffy, is a Santa Cruz resident.
Duffy was awarded the Medal of Honor for acts above and beyond the call of duty for his service in Vietnam.
He was wounded several times and refused to evacuate a command post that had been destroyed.
Duffy called in airstrikes, led evacuees out, and saved an allied soldier from falling out of a helicopter.
"Upon reaching the exfiltration sight, Major Duffy again made sure he was the last to board the helicopter. And finally, the airship was ready to depart, one of his Vietnamese allies was shot in the foot causing him to fall backward out of the helicopter. Major Duffy caught him and dragged him back in on board with him, saving one more life along the way," said President Biden.
Duffy went on to become an author and once was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for poetry.
“He is the definition of a warrior poet,” Biden said.
How were these four not recognized until now? Guy comes back from ‘Nam a hero and the feds make him wait 40-50 years?
I’m surprised they did it now. For the last 50+ years the Democrats have said that Vietnam veterans are baby killers and war criminals.
I really hated it when Biden said, “the Vietnam conflict”. Bite me Brandon!
Too bad the citation writer has now forever enshrined their lack of English language skills in the MOH document meant to bring honor to the recipient/hero for bravery in service to his country and fellow soldier.
