" My dad died of it at about 78, yet he did not drink (aside from a rare small drink of wine) or smoke, but was overweight (about 140lbs at 5'2'') and as a welder for about 40 years then he breathed in a lot of smoke from that.

I would guess 40 and 50 years ago it was difficult to diagnose or find and if one were to die from cancer it was so metastasized by that time it was difficult to pin down where it actually was. Plus we live a lot longer and there are a lot more people. Just my guess.
