Agreed, that has to be store policy.
HD is the absolute best company for returns. Even if they can’t find it in my purchase history they issue a store credit.
Our local Ace hardware continues to treat you like a rank criminal on returns, but it is one mile away and HD is three miles away.
On some things I’ll go to ace over HD but it’s fairly rare.
Where I am ace is freakin’ too expensive.
They are holding the hard to find hardware though.
Metric, standard, chrome, Galvanized. Off the wall fasteners that the big box stores just don’t have. Very handy but I wouldn’t even think about buying a grill or other big purchase there.

A minor paradox is that this is an attribute of a traditionally well-run and conservative company. But we do expect easy returns now. Just bust the idea of a credit card dispute on them as soon as they open their gob.
