It began as a typical ferry ride in Kachemak Bay. Then a minke whale went airborne.

Brian Herbst had a banner Alaska vacation. He caught rockfish and halibut, saw moose and bears, stayed in a yurt — and in a moment of perfect timing, managed to snap a photo of a minke whale mid-breach, suspended above the waters of Kachemak Bay.

Using his daughter’s high school yearbook camera and a borrowed lens, he started snapping photos.

He knew he’d gotten the perfect shot. It’s not known why the whales breach, powering up out of the water and flying into the air, Webber said. It could be a way to signal to other whales by making a loud reentry into the water, or “some heightened state of excitement or demonstration of exuberance,” he said — but that’s just speculation.

The minke whale is the smallest baleen whale in Alaska waters. They weigh up to 20,000 pounds and typically measure 25 to 30 feet long as adults, far smaller than their gargantuan counterparts, like humpback, blue and gray whales.

Clearly a cruise missle!

The question remains, is it US or Chinese? The Russians wasted the few they had on Kyiv.

That’s no Minke whale, that’s a rare hover whale. 🙂

Great photo. Back in the 50’s whale meat was available at the butcher shop. My mother would make something like a pate to put on toast points or crackers, usually for New Year’s Eve or the like. It was delicious.

A Dumb question, was this a family cultural thing or a matter of thrift?

My father was a Scotsman and would eat most anything set in front of him, my mother was German (2ed gen), similar.

Being a Navy brat we often ate what was on sale at the commissary. As a kid I thought lamb patties and hamburgers were the same? And always a treat!

Even as my father moved up through the ranks, we ate about the same.

I don’t recall any whale meat but I’m certain it would have been better than ocean perch!

I give the whale a 9 out of 10 score.

Why the score, because the whale didn't do the shite-eatin-grin, as it was still in the air, to convey I can do this, you hoomans can't.

So say's Samson the white Pitbull, with the black-eye, from the pacific northwest, 50 miles north of the San-Fran-Freak-O of the North, formerly known as Seattle. Woof, woof, woofers.

I think it was my Dad who acquired a taste for whale meat as a kid in the 30's when his family would rent a cabin from the Makah tribe near Neah Bay, Washington and fish and preserve their catch all summer.
His father shot or caught anything that swam, flew or walked and was good at it, being a ridge runner from Tennessee. He fished salmon commercially from a 16 foot boat with a handline in the 40's.
My mother came from severe poverty in Illinois and wouldn't know a whale from a catfish, but she could cook anything and make it taste good.
