It’s going to increase the front downforce making the car turn in better as well as “tucking” the nose down closer to the track and more than likely increasing top speed.
There will be minimal loss of brake cooling and at a track like Pocono it’s not a big deal like it would be at Martinsville or Bristol.
I would like to get a look at the Wind Tunnel Data...

Excellent analysis.
This "tiny" piece of tape most likely resulted in a tiny fraction more speed through the flat corners at Pocono. Small enough that it would not be noticed over a lap or two, but throughout the race it could result in an advantage of the seconds needed to pull away from the field.
While they did not get unwrapped, it is reasonable to assume the Cars of Martin Truex, Christopher Bell, Bubba Wallace and Ty Gibbs probably all had the same modification.
Bell finished 4th, Truex 7th, Wallace 8th and Gibbs 16th. so you have 5 of the top 10 and 6 of the top 20.
I expect tpo see some hefty fines, a lot of points and probably some very lengthy suspensions coming for JGR.

I’ve never been a big NaSCAR fan, but I quit watching when “smoke” retired some years ago. My take on NASCAR is it has nothing to do with racing and is all about TV revenues..

Sounds like the tape was covering part of the brake air duct and would reduce drag. Alternatively, it may have been used to modify the wheel well flair shape for the same purpose.

it’s always been part of the game...
joe gibbs racing is why nascar standardized the pit guns a few years ago...
they researched and developed a higher rpm pit gun for changing tires and other teams cried foul...
joe gibbs was also the first to recruit professional sports players for his nascar pit crews...

So this will be the biggest NASCAR cheating scandal since Clint Bowyer's fake spinout at Richmond in 2013?
I'd be very surprised if someone like Kyle Busch was cheating in the midst of contract negotiations, or Truex just after announcing one more year of racing.

Same here. But I do enjoy watching NHRA. Something about going over 300 mph in a little over three seconds.
