We have a friend in Bangkok who eats food to see if it’s bad. If he gets sick, he knows it’s bad.

To be fair, when the Nanny throws away the 60 year old sourdough starter you have kind of entered the “first world problem” category.

The storage life of cheese is highly variable depending on how it's handled. Assuming it was refrigerated, if that package had never been opened and not exposed to mold spores in the air, it would have probably been fine well past September.
