That is probably as reliable as one can get. A dog won’t eat “the wrong stuff”. Usually.

We have a friend in Bangkok who eats food to see if it’s bad. If he gets sick, he knows it’s bad.

He has a PhD.

To be fair, when the Nanny throws away the 60 year old sourdough starter you have kind of entered the “first world problem” category.

Cheers!

“Hmm, We eat veggies straight out the garden- fresh picked- while working in the garden- always have-”

Okra, just cut off the plant, in the morning, after a light rain, sometimes I carry a salt shaker. Does not get any better.

The best use date on the package of shredded cheddar cheese read 3 Sep 22. By the time I opened the package this morning, the cheese was blue and sad. Not on my omelet.

The storage life of cheese is highly variable depending on how it's handled. Assuming it was refrigerated, if that package had never been opened and not exposed to mold spores in the air, it would have probably been fine well past September.

Dairy is my favorite. First it is raw milk. Then homogenized milk. Then curds and whey. Then yogurt. Then cheese. Then aged cheese. Then moldy cheese. Then aged moldy cheese. Like it never goes bad no matter how old and moldy it becomes. Just like me...

OTOH...if you wrap ANYthing in foil and put it in our fridge......it will stay there, untouched, until the next millennium.

In 1970 the army fed us C-rations that were made in 1943. We ate things that were dead before we were born.

Good Question- they do have so much junk in them to preserve them- who knows how long they sit before being labelled?
