Opinion: Why I Had To Leave The Community I Loved To Find the School That Served My Needs [A black writer explains why she left a school that was run by blacks, and moved to a school that was run by whites and Asians]

I expected to be safest with the same people who protested, saying, “Black Lives Matter” and “Stop Killing Our Sons.” I thought the people who said my life matters would believe that my education also matters. Unfortunately, I didn’t find the community, accountability, collaboration and support that was talked about at those 8th grade recruitment meetings during my first semester in a school attended mostly by students of color and run mostly by educators of color.

I found myself in a situation where some teachers were not motivated to teach and help their students succeed

South High is a predominantly white and Asian ethnic high school where most of the teaching staff is also primarily white and Asian. They treat their students as I expected a school should, providing counselors, tutoring and “Spartan Seminar.”

My Spanish teacher has great classroom control. First, he provides us with study guides (not answers!) for upcoming quizzes. He reviews the homework to ensure we are updated on the current unit’s information. Finally, whenever someone does act up, he raises his voice and tells them to stop, which works, and we immediately return to learning.

My algebra teacher at South High was terrific. She showed the class how to work on new equations, like factoring and polynomials. She has a pleasant personality, making learning enjoyable for everyone in her classroom. She didn’t wait for my mom to email or call her; she often emailed my mom if she had information she thought would help me. My friends all agreed that she is a good teacher, which is unusual for a math class, and some even consider her their favorite teacher.

Oh swell. More race baiting. Just what America doesn’t need.

This isn’t surprising. I had a (white) friend in a “mixed” neighborhood who was good friends with his black neighbor on the street behind him. The neighbor eventually moved (because of the black people in his neighborhood) to a suburb of Dallas which had a high black population. She was unhappy, saying it was “too black” and wanted to move elsewhere again. It was intra-race “racism,” with a good basis.

THIS was allowed on Yahoo??? Shocking.

I hope she is prepared for the destruction coming her way. The democrat party has vicious slave catchers for the uppity blacks who dare leave the plantation.

She sure is a self avowed Racist isn’t she? Maybe she should be visited by CPS and have her child removed from the home for this racist hate crime against her child

This was a good article and was very hopeful. I was very impressed with the young author and his very mature attitudes and wisdom.

I was somewhat saddened when, near the end, the young man wrote:

My African-American peers and I want to be educated by teachers who look like us.

We want to hear their stories. We want to hear how they made it to college. If they go, maybe we can go, too. Tell us about African-American fraternities and sororities, dorms and the fun times they had so we know that college isn’t just boring hard work. We want to hear about their mistakes, so we learn from them.

He's imbibed too much of the black separatist crap. He should have learned from his new experiences to be more colorblind.

That was a disappointing conclusion to his otherwise fine story.

My goal is not to criticize but to remind them that their students need them. We want them to care about us. Some of their students will only care when they do. We are waiting for them.

The author does not want to admit/address it, but the problem is that most of the students at his old school just don’t care. If the students/parents don’t care, no amount of quality teaching or resources will make them care.

The “secret” is that learning is not about money or even good teaching. A teacher is largely a guide, nothing more. Motivated students largely teach themselves.

Yup. Methinks the author knows the truth, but isn’t going to say it out loud. This article is as close as he dares come.

Yeah, but I’ll bet she still votes for O’bama. I’ll bet she still uses her race to gain the advantage over more deserving Whites and Asians.

In the meantime, schools in Minneapolistan want to fire white teachers who have experience, seniority and more intelligence than black teachers.

Because... shut up you racist.

Exactly.

It’s a tacit admission by blacks that they also see themselves as incapable of being as successful as white people.

Blacks will never be able to break out of what is holding them down unless they just get the whole race thing out of it and focus on individual character and integrity without worrying about skin color.

Holding onto victim mentality never gives anyone a boost.

That’s a good point. Maybe he felt compelled to add that crap in an otherwise fine essay. He could be tossing the barking moonbats a bone.

“A teacher is largely a guide, nothing more. Motivated students largely teach themselves.”

This is one of the simplest yet most profound statements I have read on Free Republic. Kudos.

Motivated students largely teach themselves.

Bingo! In my sophomore year in high school I weighed continuing in the band vs transferring to a chemistry class I needed to attend UCSD. It was 9 weeks into the school year. My dad said I needed to buckle down and catch up. It took 3 1/2 weeks to read the classroom textbook and work every exercise. Easy A. Attending UCSD was more important to me than continuing with the band.

He’s also autistic, which sadly makes him easier to manipulate and indoctrinate.
