A good documentary that suggested Vidal got the upper hand throughout he convention debates. Buckley threatened him when called a Nazi and Vidal smirked, showing his evil side. He got to him and the filmmaker showed an obvious bias.

That’s Firestick.
They ‘loathed’ each other. The truth is Vidal loathed Buckley much more and that’s called evenhandedness by the ‘independent’ observers. The left dictates the terms as aggressors and we’re too busy reacting.
Two girly-men going at it,
As intellectuals they were equals. On an even playing field where everything is equal Vidal’s tactics showed that he’d do anything to get the upper hand. They’ll always hit below the belt first. It’s like big-time wrestling when the referee has his back turned.
Btw- Are the sang the national anthem and got it wrong, a funny moment.
It was Aretha Franklin that butchered the national anthem.
The original debates are on Youtube. Buckley destroys him. Vidal is obviously drunk and Buckley calls him a queer and says he’ll sock him in the face so he stays plastered.
After calling Buckley a crypto nazi. Whatever that is and Buckley calls him a queer he says we shouldn’t resort to name calling...

Suggested??? Not this video.
I remember Rush discussed this once and someone from National Review called in, or relayed the message, that Buckley regretted what he called Vidal the rest of his life.
I don’t believe it.
You are right. Vidal got him out of his element with the Nazi comment. Many of his Firing Line discussions throughout the decades are on Youtube. It’s a very good mental exercise where you can pick your episodes depending on the guest and subject. You gotta admit the discussion level is more than a little above Free Republic.
Love watching Buckley in his awkward, thoughtful and ultimately devastating arguments. In todays age it’s almost painful to watch him slowly eviscerate people. I would have Roddie Pipered them.

the 1960s thru Ronald Reagan were the Golden age for conservatives. It’s been downhill since Bush 41 destroyed the movement. It’s a smoldering heap at this point.
“After calling Buckley a crypto nazi. Whatever that is...”
It would mean “secret nazi”, or “hidden nazi”. Vidal was saying Buckley was really a nazi on the inside, and just pretending not to be.
Derives from the “crypto jews” of medieval Spain, who pretended to convert to Catholicism to appease the Inquisition, but continued to practice their original religion in private.
It rarely looks good to lose one’s temper.
You mean he wasn’t talking about bitcoin?
It’s rarely good to mouth off and get punched in the face.
Buckley is *still* the conservative I respect the most. Anything beyond his style is silly histrionics, even if I agree with the person.
But I was raised in such a way that it is *never* acceptable to raise one’s voice or use a mocking name for ones opponent or target. I loath what both this country and so-called ‘conservatism’ have become, even if it is a reaction to the vehemence of the left. Oh, well, Ike was the last politician I respected.
Ike didn’t do much. The country was on automatic pilot under him just as it was with Clinton. They overall legacies are positive as both were lucky.
I discovered Ernest Van den Haag through Buckley’s firing line. Have several of his debate books that I’ve enjoyed over the years. Thanks, WFB!
