I tend to agree with those theories South Africa and Israel felt squeezed by the same enemies as in the USSR and Communism aligned with the PLO and the ANC and so on.
It made perfect sense for Israel led by Menachem Begin and John Vorster’s South Africa to have collaborated.

From my limited reading of the incident, I’m inclined to believe that it was a joint Israeli-South African effort. Given the enemies that surrounded both nations, they had good reasons to keep testing nukes.
