I didn’t realize the death toll from Ian was that high.
I guess too many people wrote it off as being alarmist and decided to try to ride it out.

No, the high death tolls are due to the nws being wrong. They forecasted the storm hitting a couple of hundred miles further north and didn’t correct the forecast until it was too late for people to get out.
