It’s a wave of bad populism. NY-14 will be Democrat for the next decade and likely more, but the previous guy - Crowley - was one of the most reasonable and moderate democrats and this AOC girl kicking him out makes things much worse.
I grew up in a Texas that was 100% Democrat, carryover from Reconstruction occupation after the CW. When whole communities left the Deep South after posting GTT (Gone To Texas) on the door of the vacant house.
That started to change in the late 1960’s. The Conservative Democrats (there were such things then) were ostracized in the Dem Party and they made the huge shift later under Reagan.
I graduated from college in 1970, cast my first ballot in 1972 for Richard Nixon. Have always been a Republican.
Texas was solidified as a GOP state under Governor Perry. Texas is not the typical Republican State. It is Texas.
