Perhaps he wanted spare gasoline in case he was fleeing from police? :-)
He was likely out steeling gas by using a cordless drill or a punch and flexible water container. That is how they do it around here. I lost gas from my pickup while it was sitting in our driveway. Even with the flexible tank they prefer trucks, vans and SUVs. They get a couple of gallons and the rest drains onto the ground or runs down the storm drain.

Probably stolen from a car and he hadn’t gotten home yet.
