I saw him in person at a doo-wop concert at the Petroleum Club in Long Beach, Calif. He didn’t perform, but he presented an award to the legendary LA DJ Hunter Hancock. Akens had emerged from the LA doo-wop scene in the late 1950’s.
I was just getting into pop music in 65. And I well remember this on the radio.
I didn’t, at that age, get how the name “Jewel Akens” could be interpreted as the result of getting kicked in the groin.
