Bush dynasty looks to Jeb to run for president in 2016 (Old article/why it's too early to say who will be the nominee in 2022)
The Guardian ^ | November 13, 2014 | Dan Roberts

Posted on 11/16/2022 5:09:52 AM PST by DoodleBob

...It is a view confirmed by close confidants of Jeb, the former Florida governor, who say he would like to run, has backing from senior figures in the party, and is now weighing up the likely impact on those around him, particularly his daughter, Noelle, who fought off an addition to crack cocaine and would face media scrutiny.

...

Recent exit polls on the Republican party nomination race by CBS and Fox after last week’s midterm elections suggested Jeb Bush was ahead of more radical candidates in the Senate, such as Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, and better known than other ambitious governors, such as Rick Perry in Texas, Bobby Jindall in Louisiana, and Wisconsin’s Scott Walker.

Other favourites of the Republican establishment such as the New Jersey governor Chris Christie, the 2012 candidate Mitt Romney, and Jeb’s Florida protégé Marco Rubio, are said to be watching for a decision from him before deciding on a 2016 run and could be wary of competing directly with the Bush fundraising machine.

Only Jeb’s support for immigration and education reform, two issues that have split the Republican party in recent months, are seen in Washington as a serious political impediment.

But although very much an insider, and less likely to appeal to the Tea party wing than Paul or Cruz, Jeb admits he is only moderate by comparison with the modern Republican party, which he has criticised for being at times too extreme even for its former heroes.

...

Allies claim Jeb’s pragmatism is what is needed on issues like this that are seen as hampering the party’s chances of winning over an increasingly non-white electorate....the party establishment hopes his reputation for pragmatism will triumph over such ideological disputes with the faithful.

This article was published at the same time in the 2016 election cycle where we stand today.

We can look back and laugh, at how off the mark was this article. Indeed, Trump isn't mentioned at all; he came down the escalator seven months after this article was published. Further, Trump didn't start surging until July 2015.

And we will probably laugh at the current food fight over Trump and DeSantis come primary time. This is all premature. A year+ is forever in politics.

We should spend time solving the mail-in ballot problem rather than engage in the circular firing squad.

Keep dreaming Doodle, President Trump is a former president, a billionaire, and is already the heavy favorite of the the Republican base voters. Trump is nothing like Jeb! the shortbus clown.

The difference between 2016 and now is that in 2016 there were a number of candidates each polling in the teens.

Now we have Trump and DeSantis polling around 40% each and the rest of the field is in single digits.

And by announcing last night, Trump has cleared the field for DeSantis, who is now seen as the one and only credible Trump alternative. All the other possible contenders will have great difficulty raising money or getting media traction.

At present, Trump has created a two-horse race. Whether it will stay that way depends on whether there is some major negative event for one or the other of them in the next year and a half.

You're missing the point.

Of course Jeb was (is) a zero compared to Trump.

But everyone thought the front runner in Nov 2014 was a relative lock. Then, poof.

Maybe Trump will be the nominee. All the certainty and guarantees today, in Nov 2022, aren't worth spit.

The only poll that matters, are the primary results.

Furthermore, until the Mail-in ballot problem is fixed, it doesn't matter WHO is the nominee. And please don't tell me "it can't be fixed." Or better yet, tell that to Diana who helped fix it in WI.

Trump/DeSantis threads solve as much as the Russia/Ukraine threads.

Jeb can’t get up on his tippy-toes high enough to win the presidency.

“But everyone thought the front runner in Nov 2014 was a relative lock.”

Nonsense. Everyone knew it was a wide open primary, that’s why we had the whole clown car of candidates joining the field. They all thought they had a chance because there was no front runner until Trump got in.

Well, our Republican, hard won JUDGES did the heavy lifting on the drop boxes. Every State (last count, 25?) with a Republican Governor needs to get on the stick about it RIGHT NOW.

Make those calls, People! Be a PITA to your legislators until they HEAR you. :)

That said, I’d never vote for Jeb. Ever. IMHO, he assisted in the murder of Terri Schaivo. I never forget, and I rarely forgive.

“suggested Jeb Bush was ahead”

That doesn’t mean he was the clear front runner. If it’s a 10 man race and one guy is up by 5% that isn’t a clear front runner.

I'm sorry, but Jeb was the front runner. It's embarrassing but Bush recorded 23 percent support amongst GOP voters in a late Dec 2014 CNN/ORC poll . That put Bush 10 points ahead of Chris Christie, and 16 points ahead of Ben Carson.

You seem to believe Trump is a lock, that was then this is now, he's got MAGA nation behind him, what could POSSIBLY get in the ways this win? Fair points.

Except, something ALWAYS gets in the way of a win. Ask Jeb. Ask Hillary. Ask the Atlant Falcons. That something, at its core, is complacency.
