That sounds really horrendous! Yike!
What happens when you’re in a hurry and cut corners. We’d been pulling maintenance on the pigs when we were told to load up and drive to the Armory for weapons turn-in. The driver of said vehicle didn’t replace the firewall between the driver’s compartment and the engine, which sat directly to the right of the driver. The engine had started smoking while we were in the field, and the mechs said they’d look at it once we were back from the armory. So the engine caught fire while it was on the road, the flames immediately shot into the driver’s compartment. Some psychology for you: the driver had the flames coming from his right. He drove his pig across the oncoming lane and ditched it on the other side of the road. He was instinctively steering the vehicle away from the flames though clearly that was not helpful. He wound up with some first degree burns, and a set of cammie pants that exposed him rather embarrassingly.
