We need to eliminate tips. Charge a fair price for this food and service, give good service. I’m tired of people asking annd insisting on Tips, especially some places I’ve been to recently that automatically added it even for a single person eating.
That would devastate the wait industry. Few people are going to be willing to work a minimal wage to serve food when they were earning $400/shift by providing great service.
> while 60% of Americans said they wanted to ditch tipping altogether.
Absolutely. Tips should be the exception and not the norm.
To each his own. I lived in Germany for 4 years, the tip was automatically added to the bill. If the service is excellent, I’ll go beyond 15%. I gave a 30% tip on our dinner at Lago (Las Vegas) two nights ago. It was one of the finest dining experiences I’ve ever had.
Agreed. Just pay all staff at least minimum wage, and no longer require that customers pay their salaries through tips.
Eastern Europeans think you are patronizing them if you tip more then a few coins.
Now, all the pubs use ipad touch screens that don’t even tell you the price first but give you pre programmed “suggestions” to give a 20% tip. I’m no cheapskate but all you did was pour a beer in to a glass and didn’t even bring it out.
Why tip at all? The servers make $18 an hour now, it costs $30 for two orders of burgers and fries at our local diner. It is more for breakfast omelets, hash browns and toast for 2.
15% is the max in our house.
When you go places without tipping, the service blows. The UK pre-tipping is a good example.
The places that tick me off are the ones where I order from a counter person, pick up my own food, and clean up my own table.
Why do I need to tip at a place like that? (Think Five Guys, Smashburger, etc.).
I would be in favor of abandoning tipping, but some of the things it might lead to could be undesirable. Without tipping many restaurant owners would end up with the less desirable waitresses & servers or would have to pay real wages to get the good ones. If they paid more to get the good ones, I think it’s possible their businesses would suffer because of the prices they would feel obligated to charge. Then I guess some might have to go “cafeteria style” to maintain business, which wouldn’t be all bad.
Eliminate tips……..and have no service whatsoever. I bet half of normal sit down restaurants would convert to just serving from to cash register.
