I think it gives weak minded people the illusion of knowledge.
20 years ago on a trip to Athens, I went on a day guided tour and there was a retired gent from, I think Vermont who was asking the guide continuously about Dan Brown’s book. I pointed out to him the flaws in it but he went on believing those stoas facts.

I used to have, decades ago, a co-worker who was convinced he didnt owe income tax because it was illegitimate (also medicare and SSS), and always had a beef with our employer because he wanted to stop them from withholding. He wasnt otherwise stupid, but he had a bee in the bonnet.
That’s a polite way of putting it. I tend to think it’s basically lazy.
These ideas have been around a while. I was taking Egyptology many moons ago when a friend noticed and informed me that a more “advanced” group had given the Egyptians the knowledge of how to build pyramids. I asked him why the “advanced” people gave the Egyptians knowledge of faulty pyramids since some of their early structures had fallen over during construction.
He didn’t have an answer for that since the only pyramids he knew of were the famous ones.
