To be sure there are some good ones out there; it’s the thought that counts :)

Wow. Falling through the ice is serious business because you simply cannot climb out by yourself. You were very fortunate you brother was nearby and knew how to help you get out!

The idea of falling into ice-cold water still scares me to death. If the ice isn’t 6 inches or more thick, I’m not heading out on it.

It’s probably a good idea today to keep politics out of friendly small talk with acquaintances.

It’s horrible when your mother makes you wear a coat over (or UNDER!) your beautiful princess costume.

We usually have mild weather at Hallowe’en, here; we hated when it was cold. It completely ruined our great costumes.

“You and my Grandma.”

I could be old enough to know your grandma. But I’m not sure which is better, your exuberant youth or my knowledgeable advanced age. Toss up.

“I understood it was used for the milk vats to keep the milk cool in the warm weather.”

That use would be the short length of time the warm weather actually existed in some places. Many times the outside air was colder than the spikes cut so they stayed ice for a long time unneeded. One place I went in the 80’s had a stand alone freezer which was turned off and a window left open on the building during the winter, barred of course, (wolves), because in winter it got colder outside than the freezer inside. Why waste the manpower and tools to refreeze ice?

I’ll be 70 next year. I was raised by old people, and my father and grandmother grew up only knowing the ‘Ice Box’ - so I grew up calling it that, too.

I was an adult before I taught myself to say ‘refrigerator’, after I began to realize that people didn’t know what I meant :-)

“...after I began to realize that people didn’t know what I meant :-)”

That’s one of the advantages of being old I have found. The youth today think we are dumb by not understanding what they say to us, either. Course the level of not understanding changes with where you are. City kids only know ice that is hanging off their single unit attached homes (townhouses). Country kids are getting closer to them with the advent of phones and pads. This is why they spend so much time in the basement and don’t get dirty. And a little honest dirty is great.
