"The English" - a Freeper movie review

"Short or long, we ain't here but a moment. You nor me. None of us."
- Eli Whipp

Eli: "Can you shoot?"
Cornelia: "If I have to."
Eli: "Oh, you'll have to."

"Difference between what you need and what you want is what you can put on a horse."
- Eli Whipp

If you're looking for a great Western, checkout "The English", a six-part mini-series available on Amazon Prime.

It stars Emily Blunt as a young English aristocrat, Lady Cornelia Locke, who travels to the American West in the 1890s to find the man who killed her son. She joins forces with a Pawnee ex-cavalry scout, Eli Whipp, played by Chaske Spencer.

Acting is superb, and cinematography is stunning. You get a great sense of the vastness of the West with both its beauty and danger. It's one of those rare series where you forget you're watching a movie.

I won't give any plot spoilers, except to say the story has multiple sub-plots with some significant twists, which come together at the end in a well executed bit of writing.

The movie is remarkably "unwoke", with male characters being manly and and female characters being feminine. Unlike so many movies, Cornelia is not presented as a competent-in-everything "Mary Sue", but instead she learns along her journey.

It's a thoughtful and well crafted movie from every angle. It's nice to know there are still people out there who can put a good drama together.

I thought this was an exceptional mini-series on Amazon Prime. It's what a movie can be when done right.

I was going to watch this, but feared it would be a woke-fest. Thanks for the review, now I’ll give it a go!

Thank you for the recommendation. I trust this movie won’t have a politically correct romance like 1883 did?

Thanks. I’ll give it a try. Love a good western. One of the reviewers says that this is a western version of Hamlet.

Emily Blunt sure knows her History. Great series. More realistic depiction of western expansion than has ever been produced.

“1883” was so far over the top as to be pathetic. I kept watching like I watch a car wreck.

I watched the entire series, but then again, I’d pay to watch Emily Blunt sleep.

No woke-ism, and it’s not horrible, but it’s a far cry of the historical authenticity of series like ‘1883.’

Watched the entire Season one. Enjoyed it but felt it a bit disjointed between episodes. Felt like it was based on a book but skipped random chapters. One example if you’ve watched it: what became of the accordion player?

I looked at an ad today for the movie Monte Walsh.

The ad stated that the movie was about how barbed wire and railroads put an end to Cowboys.

I thought about that for awhile.

They really did.

My Dad died many years ago and my Mom is dating a cowboy.

A real one.

He has wild horses on his land “Because I like to look at em.”

Tough man. Good man.

Not many like him left.

The movie actually has a well constructed and very bittersweet romance.

Yes!

I hope she was watching the fashion because I couldn’t take my eyes off the passion!

I wasn’t familiar with Emily Blunt until this series. She is both a classic beauty and a darn good actress.

I’d agree there are so many flashbacks and flash forwards it can get confusing. I actually went back and re-watched the series which helped me to pickup on some of the subtle clues I missed the first time thru.

I watched half of the first episode. It didn’t interest me. Maybe I’ll give it another shot.

I was blown away by the cinematography. The way they’d capture a field of wild prairie flowers of the how they’d include a huge swath of the sky in a shot to give a sense of the immense scale of the West was beautifully done.

Watched the first episode and thought...meh. But went back later and almost binged the balance. It is very good and very different. Actors are great and cinematography was outstanding. The kind of piece you will think about for a while.
