I was watching some Earth, Wind & Fire videos recently, and in the comments someone asked, "Why can't we get music like this anymore?" And someone answered, "Back then, black people were taught right from wrong." Even more precisely than that, it was because almost all of the early R&B singers were raised in the church and were heavily influenced by the beautiful Gospel Music they grew up with. I'm betting statistically you would be able to draw a pretty strong correlation between the time church attendance began to drop sometime in the 1970's to the decline of good R&B in particular when these children came of age.
