“I live a 10-hour round trip from the nearest grocery store.”

English as a second language.

I understand your issue with the above sentence. It is stylistically problematic - but, strictly speaking, grammatically... possible.

A better sentence would be:

I live 5 hours (in each direction; by car) from the nearest grocery store.

But the original sentence conveys the same information in a more-compact fashion - and is, perhaps, more attention-getting.

Regards,

D-Bag Grammar nahzees

The two phrases are nothing alike.

“a 10-hour round trip” is not the same as “5 hours (in each direction; by car)”.
The first expresses a bigger, more monumental effort than simple travel time. The second, your weak, d-bag effort, expresses nothing other than time, leaving out the important point of effort, as well as the magnitude and imagery of the excursion.

Ya might know grammar, but ya ain’t a writer.
